Stanceworks 244 GTK
WHAT IS IT?
For some time now, I have been a friend and supporter of Mike Burroughs and his development of the automotive lifestyle brand and forum: Stanceworks. This last year he has been developing a new chassis for use in Time Attack racing. A 308 GTS Ferrari with a motor from a Honda sedan. When I learned of the projects development I began to follow the build with plans to replicate the car in 3D for later use as a 3rd party modification in a sim racing game title, Assetto Corsa. With the car taking on heavy modifications it became the plan to rebuild the cars physics model files so the car felt akin to the real thing.
As the project came into its reveal phase the model was able to be used to decide on the color choice for the car prior to SEMA.
01 BOdy modifications
Getting a good enough sense of both the body and interior of the car was important. While these things aren’t directly affecting the cars manner on track, they do help to enthrall the user and viewer into feeling a more ‘realistic’ nature of the car. This parallels many design projects and their need for strong visuals to call the reader into action. With the car being meant for use in a sim title, this level of immersion was important.
02 Mechanical modifications
One of the main points of interest for the car that was being built was its unexpected motor swap. With this meant the development of all the supporting parts to make this new motor work. So I devoted a portion of time to recreating that and placing it in the model. Its visible through the body work and really helps to identify the project for those who have followed it.
03 Building a scene
While the work was looking good in a basic box with perfect lighting, I really wanted to be able to show the car in a more realistic setting. I used Google earth as a visual reference to rebuild the location where the car was being built and used it as a setting to render the car against for better visualizing textures on the car.
Next Steps converting the car for use in game
With the model finished its time to now move the model into game. This requires modifying existing physics files as well as setting up the model in specific formats and organized files.
